Every day more than 53 million children, or 20 percent of the total US population, attend school or day care. Schools are vulnerable to catastrophic terrorism incidents. American schools are vulnerable simply because they are easy targets for terrorists.

The United States Department of Education issued an advisory to schools in October 2004, with recommendations for heightening security and emergency preparedness in light of the Beslan, Russia, school terror attack. This attack, which took place in September 2004, left approximately 326 people dead (156 of them children) and over 700 wounded.

Millions of students in American universities are at even greater risk to terrorist attacks due to their expansive campuses, numerous facilities and open environments.  For these reasons American universities are prime targets for terrorist attacks.

Safeguarding Our Children
Despite advancements in these sectors, there is an alarming consensus that school scecurity is tragically deficient. According to a survey conducted in 2004, by the National Association of School Resource Officers, 95 percent of respondents said schools were vulnerable to terrorist attack.
