Dams are a vital part of the US infrastructure. There are approximately 78,000 dams listed on the National Inventory of Dams in the United States. Many dams are intertwined with the US water supply, transportation and electricity infrastructures. Ten percent of American cropland is irrigated using water stored behind dams. Additionally, over 74,000 megawatts of renewable electricity, which is approximately 10 percent of the nation's electricity, are produced by these dams.
