Terrorists have demonstrated that airplanes make excellent weapons of mass destruction. Airports and airlines continue to present terrorists with opportunities for aircraft to be utilized as weapons and for airports to be ideal terrorist targets.

The National Strategy for Physical Protection of Critical Infrastructure and Key Assets identifies 5,000 public airports that present a "protective challenge" which must be secured if the transportation sector of the economy is to be protected from mass disruption.

The aviation sector of the transportation industry is vast – there are thousands of entry points and a symbolic value of freedom of movement that Americans cherish.

The National Strategy breaks the aviation system into two parts:

• Physical assets such as airplanes and airports

• Aviation command and control structure

Safeguarding America's Airports
The National Strategy also lists five specific needs that must be addressed to safeguard this system. However, it does not specifically address how threats to this system can be countered. Shafran USA can provide solutions to these specific needs.
